Have you ever opened your phone to check your messages, only to find yourself scrolling endlessly on TikTok, Instagram or Pinterest? Yeah, me too. As the rise of social media creeps into our lives, it’s no surprise that we unintentionally spend hours on it. Social media is everywhere — From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to bed. While it fuels our daily inspiration, motivations and aesthetic vision, it can also kill your creativity.
Let’s dive into the reasons why and break them down. Here are 4 ways social media might be affecting your creative spark and what you can do about it.
You’re consuming more than you’re creating
Creativity thrives when we make, not just when we look. According to a 2023 study published in Creativity Studies, excessive scrolling creates mental overload and shortens our attention span, leaving little energy for genuine imagination.
Tip: Before opening any app, ask: "Am I creating or just consuming?" Set a time limit on scrolling and create a small piece of content every day, even if it never gets posted.
Comparison is crushing your confidence
Social media makes it way too easy to compare your rough draft to someone else’s polished final product. That constant exposure to highly edited, “perfect” content triggers creative insecurity.
Tip: Mute accounts that make you feel less-than. Follow creators who are open about their creative struggles. And remember: creativity isn't a competition.
You're always "on", and it's draining your brain
Social media has turned creativity into performance. This pressure to always be “on” can lead to burnout. A paper from Information Technology & People describes this as the “double-edged sword” of social media: it connects and inspires, but also overwhelms and depletes our mental energy.
Tip: Take regular “scroll detox” days. Write in a notebook, doodle on paper, brainstorm without a screen. Your brain needs room to wander.
Inspiration turns into imitation
It’s hard to know if your idea is original or just something you saw and forgot to credit. Constant exposure to trends and viral content can subconsciously influence your creative output, making your work feel more derivative.
Tip: Limit how much content you consume before a creative session. Give yourself time to explore your own thoughts before you look for outside inspiration.
So, is social media all bad for creativity? Not necessarily, it can inspire, connect, and even spark new ideas if you use it intentionally. However, too much of it can be the very thing that blocks the creativity you're chasing. The next time you feel stuck, maybe the answer isn’t scrolling through your For You Page, but it’s stepping away from the screen.
